Chaetopleura
papalio (Spengler, 1797)
This moderately large chiton has strongly raised valves. Lateral areas
raised and almost smooth. Central areas very finely, longitudinally
grooved. Color of valves is chocolate brown with dorsal areas darker
brown edged paler. Girdle is moderately wide and dark brownish in color.
The dorsal area is covered with smooth, yellowish brown obtusely pointed
spicules.
Illustrated specimen on left was collected by Alan Seccombe in False
Bay, Cape Province, South Africa. Both specimens are from the G & L
Burghardt Collection .
